What is Chai?
Chai, masala chai, or masala tea, is a spice-infused decoction consumed in all regions of India. The cup of chai is a symbol of welcome there. The use of spices is very common in Ayurvedic medicine, the ancient science developed in India based on all aspects of human beings (from the most abstract aspects like the soul to the most concrete and physical aspects like the body).
How to Use Chai
The best way to prepare chai is to make a decoction, which involves boiling the spices for 15 minutes in water. Once the mixture has cooled slightly, it is recommended to strain it before enjoying. This method, unlike infusion, allows for better release of the aromas and soothing properties of the spices.
However, if for lack of time or means you prefer to prepare an infusion, no one will blame you! In this case, infuse the chai detox spices for 10 minutes in a floating filter or a paper filter, and remember to remove it after the allotted time, or the preparation will be very aromatic!
Chai Latte
Perhaps you have also heard of chai latte? It is a spice decoction where water is mixed (or sometimes completely replaced) with milk. You can also add black tea and sugar according to taste.
To prepare it like in India, you need to boil 1 cup of milk with one cup of water. Add 2 teaspoons of crushed spices, 1 teaspoon of black tea, and 2 to 3 teaspoons of sugar. Let it boil for 15 minutes. Filter and... Enjoy!
While in the West spices are used in small quantities in cooking to add a hint of aroma, they are widely consumed in Ayurvedic tradition to purify the body and mind.
