Cretan Dakos Recipe
dakos are traditional Cretan mezzes. It's impossible to resist this specialty, these delicious tomato-topped bread bites!
Ingredients for the recipe:
- 4 slices of barley bread (or whole wheat bread)
- 4 ripe tomatoes
- 200 g of feta cheese
- 1 cucumber (optional)
- 1 small red onion
- 12 black olives (preferably Kalamata)
- 4 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil from Crete
- 1 tablespoon of capers (optional)
- 1 tablespoon of chopped oregano from Crete
- Salt and pepper
Preparation:
- Lightly moisten the barley bread slices by quickly running them under water. This will make them slightly softer.
- Arrange the bread slices on a serving tray or plate.
- Crumble the feta into small pieces.
- Wash and finely chop the tomatoes.
- Peel and dice the cucumber (if you choose to use it).
- Thinly slice the red onion.
- Pit the olives if necessary and cut them in half.
- Evenly distribute the chopped tomatoes over the bread slices.
- Top with the crumbled feta.
- If using cucumber, scatter the diced cucumber over the bread.
- Sprinkle the sliced red onion on top of the slices.
- Finally, add the olives.
