Cretan Dakos Recipe

dakos are traditional Cretan mezzes. It's impossible to resist this specialty, these delicious tomato-topped bread bites!

Ingredients for the recipe:

  • 4 slices of barley bread (or whole wheat bread)
  • 4 ripe tomatoes
  • 200 g of feta cheese
  • 1 cucumber (optional)
  • 1 small red onion
  • 12 black olives (preferably Kalamata)
  • 4 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil from Crete
  • 1 tablespoon of capers (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon of chopped oregano from Crete
  • Salt and pepper

Preparation:

  1. Lightly moisten the barley bread slices by quickly running them under water. This will make them slightly softer.
  2. Arrange the bread slices on a serving tray or plate.
  3. Crumble the feta into small pieces.
  4. Wash and finely chop the tomatoes.
  5. Peel and dice the cucumber (if you choose to use it).
  6. Thinly slice the red onion.
  7. Pit the olives if necessary and cut them in half.
  8. Evenly distribute the chopped tomatoes over the bread slices.
  9. Top with the crumbled feta.
  10. If using cucumber, scatter the diced cucumber over the bread.
  11. Sprinkle the sliced red onion on top of the slices.
  12. Finally, add the olives.

Enjoy your meal!
