How to Use Binchotan Charcoal for Water Filtration?

  •  Preparation: Rinse the charcoal under running water to remove dust residues. Boil it for 5 to 10 minutes to sterilize and activate its filtration properties;
  •  Filtration: Place the charcoal in a water pitcher and let it act for at least 4 to 8 hours. For best results, leave it overnight;
  •  Maintenance: Repeat boiling every 3 to 4 weeks to reactivate the charcoal. Each piece of binchotan can be used for about 3 to 6 months.

Properties of Binchotan Charcoal Filtration

Binchotan charcoal effectively removes chlorine, organic contaminants, and certain heavy metals from the water while releasing beneficial minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. This process enriches the water, improves its taste and nutritional properties, and neutralizes bad odors, resulting in purer and more pleasant drinking water.

Where Does Binchotan Charcoal Come From?

Binchotan charcoal is made from ubame oak, a robust tree typical of Japanese forests. This hardwood is particularly valued for its density and ability to produce high-quality charcoal. The slow, artisanal carbonization process transforms ubame oak into Binchotan, renowned for its filtration properties and exceptional purity.

The Japanese Origin of Binchotan

Binchotan, known as "white charcoal," has been used in Japan for over 300 years to purify water. This charcoal is traditionally produced in the Wakayama region, where specialized artisans continue this ancient craft. In addition to its water filtration properties, binchotan is also used to purify the air and deodorize enclosed spaces.
